Extended periods away from home, whether for holiday, business trips, or other reasons, can leave your property vulnerable to various risks such as damage from nature, accidents, or potential break-ins. It's crucial to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of your residence. Here are some essential precautions to consider:

Protect Your Plumbing: Before leaving, especially if you anticipate freezing temperatures, safeguard your pipes and plumbing by turning off the water supply to your home and draining the water lines. Additionally, consider shutting off the gas supply to the water heater to prevent potential leaks or bursts.

Secure Your Home: Take precautions against potential weather hazards by trimming back tree limbs that could pose a threat during high winds. Secure outdoor furniture and appliances for added protection.

Manage Your Heating and Air Conditioning System: Adjust your thermostat appropriately based on the weather conditions and time of year to avoid unnecessary heating or cooling of empty rooms. Investing in a smart thermostat allows you to program and remotely adjust the temperature, ensuring comfort upon your return.

Install a Home Security System: Enhance the security of your home by installing a reliable home security system. Many systems offer features such as live video feeds accessible via smartphone, providing peace of mind while you're away.

Create a Lived-In Appearance: Deter potential burglars by creating the illusion that your home is occupied. Use timers for interior lights to simulate activity, arrange for garden maintenance, and suspend mail and newspaper deliveries. Enlist the help of a trusted neighbour to check your doorstep and hold any packages until your return.

Avoid Hiding Spare Keys: Refrain from the outdated "hide-a-key" practice, as experienced burglars often easily uncover hidden keys. Instead, entrust a spare key to a reliable family member, neighbour, or friend.

Secure Valuables: Safeguard your most valuable belongings by storing them in a secure safe, away from common areas burglars might search. Alternatively, conceal valuables in inconspicuous containers and hide them in less obvious locations. Try not to forget where you put them!

Exercise Caution on Social Media: Refrain from sharing holiday plans or updates on social media platforms until after your return. Publicising your absence could inadvertently attract unwanted attention to your unoccupied home.

Staying insured: Ensure you have adequate home insurance coverage to provide peace of mind in case of an unfortunate event. Review the terms and conditions of your policy, especially regarding coverage for extended periods of unoccupancy. Additionally, consider obtaining travel insurance if you're planning a long trip.

Upon your return, conduct a thorough inspection of your home to ensure everything is in order and address any issues promptly. With these precautions in place, you can enjoy your time away with peace of mind, knowing your home is safe and secure.

When it comes to protecting your home against storms, bad weather, and high winds, there are several essential steps you can take.

Here's a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for these weather-related challenges:

Preparing for Storms and Bad Weather:

  1. Stay Informed: Begin by keeping a watchful eye on weather forecasts and warnings relevant to your area (https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/). The Met Office warnings are given a colour (yellow, amber or red) depending on a combination of both the impact the weather may have and the likelihood of those impacts occurring. Read more.
  2. Compile a List of Emergency Contact Numbers: Create a list of important emergency contact numbers, including those offered by your insurer, local authorities, and utility companies. Store these numbers in your mobile phone and ensure it is fully charged, ready to be used in case of an emergency.
  3. Home Preparations: Take practical measures around your home to minimise any potential damage. Protect your important possessions by moving them upstairs or to higher ground. Store valuables in waterproof containers that can be easily relocated in case of an emergency. Familiarise yourself with the location of your fuse box. Make sure your drains and gutters are unblocked and free of debris to allow for proper water drainage.
  4. Garden Precautions: Fasten any loose objects in your garden that could become projectiles in a storm, such as garden furniture.
  5. Deploy Flood Defences: If you live in a known flood area or are concerned about flooding, install flood defences before the arrival of inclement weather. Products like sandbags can be used to block your home's doors and entrances.
  6. Keep Home Insurance Information Handy: Keep a copy of your home insurance policy number and documents within easy reach. This information will be valuable if you need to make a claim.

Preparing for High Winds:

  1. Check Roof Tiling: Ensure that your roof tiling is secure. It's advisable to hire a professional roofer to inspect your roof. Damaged, missing, or loose tiles can lead to severe damage during high winds.
  2. Inspect Fence Panels: Examine your fence panels and promptly repair or replace any that are damaged. In extreme winds, fence panels can become airborne and cause damage to your property and neighbouring homes.
  3. Secure Windows and Doors: Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house. You should pay special attention to large doors such as those on garages. Leaving windows open could inadvertently causing damage to your home interior.
  4. Stabilise Garden Objects: Secure loose objects in your garden such as rubbish bins, garden furniture, and ornaments. Consider putting these items into a secure place, such as a shed, to prevent them from being scattered by the wind.
  5. Trim Tree Branches: Prune overgrown tree branches and trees, as they are more likely to fall and cause damage in heavy winds.

By taking these precautionary measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of property damage. This guidance can help to ensure your safety during storms, bad weather, and high winds.

The winter chill is here, and it's time to cosy up your home while protecting it from the cold!

Here are some essential tips to prepare your home for the weather. Plus, a friendly reminder about our unoccupancy clause to keep your coverage intact.

🔥 Keep the Heat On:

Help prevent frozen pipes and potential damage by ensuring your home stays warm. Ideally you should heat your home to a temperature of at least 18 °C. This is particularly important if you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a health condition, such as heart or lung disease.

Our property owners unoccupancy clause requires you to maintain a minimum temperature of 15°C (58°F) if unoccupied for more than 31 consecutive days.

🏡 Inspect Your Roof:

Heavy snow and ice can take a toll on your roof. Ensure it's in top shape by inspecting for any damage or leaks. Small issues caught early can save big repairs and disruption.

🍂 Clear Gutters:

Remove leaves and debris from your gutters to prevent ice dams. This will help water flow smoothly, reducing the risk of leaks and water damage.

🪟 Seal Gaps and Cracks:

Keep the cold air out and the warmth in by sealing any gaps or cracks in doors and windows. It's a cost-effective way to improve energy efficiency.

If your property is unoccupied:

🛑 Turn Off Supplies:

If your property will be vacant, turn off the water, gas, and electricity supplies at the mains. This simple step can safeguard your home from unforeseen issues and minimise risks.

💧 Drain Water Systems:

For extra precaution during November to March, drain all water tanks, pipes, and apparatus. This helps prevent freezing and bursting, saving you from potential water damage headaches.

Remember, these simple steps can make a big difference in protecting your home during the colder weather.

Sagic Proudly Supports The Salvation Army’s Partnership Trophy

Sagic is proud to have sponsored The Salvation Army’s annual Partnership Trophy, a five-a-side football tournament aimed at raising awareness of homelessness and promoting mental well-being. Held in Manchester, this year’s event brought together 30 teams from across the UK, with participants representing individuals currently experiencing homelessness.

The Orchard from Bradford emerged victorious, with Hartson presenting the trophy and praising the players' fitness, teamwork, and strong sense of camaraderie.

As a key supporter of the event, Sagic continues its commitment to the charitable work of The Salvation Army. Our sponsorship contributes to meaningful initiatives like this, helping provide not just a day of football, but a message of hope and community for those working to rebuild their lives.

Last month, leading specialist insurance intermediary, Surewise, officially launched their Safer Mobility Campaign: keeping mobility scooter drivers safe.

The purpose of the campaign, which was prompted by what seemed to be a spike in incidents involving mobility scooter customers at the beginning of 2024 - and by research that revealed a 20% increase in motor scooter casualties in the last decade - is to make people aware of the dangers faced by drivers of mobility scooters and to improve road safety education for all.

Research Found Mobility Scooter Drivers Are Over Two Times More Likely To Be Killed In Road Incidents

Surewise conducted research to look into the vulnerability of mobility scooter users while driving their scooters. They discovered that alarmingly, mobility scooter drivers are more than twice as likely to be killed in a road crash than other road users.

The insurance intermediary analysed official figures from the Department of Transport, and found that in 2022 alone, nine mobility scooter users were killed and 270 were injured in collisions on UK roads.

What’s more, the figures also show that over the last decade, mobility scooter casualties have increased by an average of 20 percent, year on year.

The Surewise Safer Mobility Campaign

Discussing the campaign, Surewise commented:

“Our claims team have seen first-hand the trauma victims of mobility scooter crashes experience.

After a spike in reported incidents earlier in 2024, our team felt an obligation and responsibility to dive deeper into exactly what is happening on our roads and raise awareness on how all drivers can keep mobility scooter users safe.”

The campaign aims to educate all road users about the risks facing mobility scooter users, who are particularly vulnerable if they are involved in a crash.

Richard Hannan, Director at Surewise, added: “We were horrified to discover that mobility scooter drivers are more than twice as likely to be killed in a road crash than other road users.

“And, sadly, the problem only seems to be getting worse. Worryingly, the casualty data shows a substantial increase in casualties since 2011, and our claims team takes regular calls from distressed customers who have been injured in collisions.

“Mobility scooter users are very vulnerable, particularly when travelling on the roads, and, unlike cars and other vehicles, the driver has little protection in the event of a crash.”

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive at sagic, applauds Surewise's Safer Mobility Campaign, which deeply resonates with sagic’s core values. We commend Surewise for their steadfast commitment to safety and proactive measures in tackling the concerning increase in incidents involving mobility scooter users.

Mobility Scooter Safety Resources & Tips

To accompany the campaign, Surewise has created a number of resources and tools to help mobility scooter users keep themselves safe.  You can get access to a free safety guide - printed or digital - as well as a reflective sticker bundle to make your scooter more visible.

To find out more, visit the official Safer Mobility Campaign page here and sign up for your free resources.

Embracing the dream of homeownership isn't merely about possessing a property; it's about securing a sanctuary that mirrors your essence, offering comfort, stability, and a canvas for cherished memories. Recent research delves into the latest housing market dynamics, unveiling a tapestry of insights that shape the residential landscape in 2024.

Owning a Home: A Snapshot

As of March 2024, research reveals that 50% of UK adults are proud homeowners, encompassing a staggering 26.4 million individuals nationwide. Within this cohort, 28% have achieved the remarkable milestone of outright homeownership, while 22% navigate the journey with a mortgage.

Unveiling Priorities: What Matters Most

In the quest for a dream home, prospective buyers prioritise crucial factors. Recent analysis underscores that the condition and age of a property reign supreme among UK home seekers, followed closely by considerations such as local crime rates and nearby amenities. These elements form the cornerstone of decision-making for discerning buyers.

In-Demand Destinations: Hotspots of Homeownership

Delving into regional preferences, recent analysis identifies Birmingham, Glasgow, and Sheffield as the most coveted cities for homeownership. These urban hubs witness heightened interest, evident in the surge of Google searches for “Homes for sale in X,” where X represents the city in question. Northern Ireland emerges as a beacon of homeownership, boasting the highest ownership rates nationally, with 57% of its populace owning their residences.

A Glimpse into the Wallet: Understanding Affordability

Navigating the realm of property ownership, it's essential to grasp the nuances of affordability. Recent data showcases an intriguing dichotomy: while average house prices in England soar to £306,000, Northern Ireland offers an enticing proposition with an average price tag of just £180,000, making it the most affordable locale for aspiring homeowners.

The Journey to Ownership: Insights by Age

Unveiling a mosaic of homeownership across generations, recent research underscores that individuals aged 55 and above lead the charge in property ownership, with a remarkable 46.7% proudly owning their homes. Conversely, the younger demographic aged 18-24 grapples with lower ownership rates, reflecting the evolving landscape of homeownership aspirations across age brackets.

In Summary

In the tapestry of homeownership, each thread weaves a unique narrative, reflecting aspirations, priorities, and economic landscapes. This research unravels these threads, offering invaluable insights that illuminate the path to homeownership in 2024 and beyond.

Understanding the ever-evolving landscape of homeownership trends is not only essential for those looking to buy or sell property but also for homeowners seeking to protect their investments. As you navigate the complexities of purchasing your dream home, it's crucial to safeguard your newfound asset with comprehensive home insurance coverage. Whether you're a first-time buyer in Birmingham or a seasoned homeowner in Glasgow, securing the right insurance policy can provide peace of mind against unforeseen risks and potential financial losses.

In the post-pandemic world, travel insurance has become a crucial safeguard for avid travelers. Despite rising costs and uncertainties, millions of Brits are determined to embark on their long-awaited getaways. After being forced to put plans on hold for reasons beyond our control over the last few years, people are prepared to make sacrifices to have those breaks and enjoy long overdue holidays.

Research from our travel insurance partners at Just Travel Cover shows that 76% of people still prioritise holidays despite rising household bills. Data from the World Travel Market reveals that nearly half of those booking holidays are doing so because they want something to look forward to.

But why is travel insurance more important than ever? A recent survey of more than 1,000 people showed that travelers feel it's essential, especially after the challenges posed by Covid. Dale Robinson at Just Travel Cover states, "We’re seeing more people choose gold and silver levels of cover than pre-pandemic, and we’re still getting questions around Covid cover. People are much more confident to travel, but they want to ensure they’re protected, particularly if they have pre-existing medical conditions."

The cost of medical treatment abroad is rising, and people could be left facing huge bills if they need emergency treatment overseas – one of the reasons why Travel Insurance is so important.

Partnering for Peace of Mind: Sagic and Just Travel Cover

Sagic has partnered with Just Travel Cover to help you find the Travel Insurance you need for your next holiday. Whether it's next week or next year, you can get covered for holidays up to 20 months in advance. The advice is always to arrange cover as soon as you book, so you have cancellation cover in place – just in case something goes wrong before you travel*.

Key features of the policies offered include:

  • Coverage for hundreds of medical conditions
  • Bronze, silver, and gold options depending on the level of cover you need
  • No age limit

Just Travel Cover has your luggage covered too with a new benefit called "Smart Luggage". This policy pays money straight into your bank if your luggage doesn’t come off the carousel and cannot be located after 48 hours.
